Aromatherapy Massage
By Julia Hughes

Many different types of ailments can be addressed by aromatherapy and massage.  Skin problems, stress, muscle tension and insomnia are but some of the health problems that an aromatherapy massage can help combat.

Massage can also have wide-ranging systemic effects, such as reducing anxiety, creating a feeling of well-being, promote positive body awareness and even increase muscle flexibility.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy, once considered a fringe practice, has become so generally accepted and respected that it is increasingly on offer to hospital patients as part of their treatment.

Aromatic essential oils can be found in various parts of a plant, including seeds, bark, root, flowers, wood, resin, balsam and leaves, eg bitter orange tree oil is obtained from it's fruit peel whereas neroli oil comes from orange blossoms.

The wide range of aromatic materials obtained from natural sources and the art of extracting and use of these essential oils stretch right back to the very heart of the earliest civilizations, and have steadily developed over the course of time.

Each individual oil possesses different properties which can be combined into gentle remedies.  The selected essential oils are blended with a carrier/base massage oil to create a unique mix for each client's individual needs.  The blend is then applied to the skin with a traditional body massage.

Essential oils are easily absorbed via the skin and mucosa into the bloodstream, affecting the nature of the circulatory system as a whole.  Oils with a warming effect not only cause better local blood circulation but also influence the inner organs.  They bring a warmth and glow to the surface of the skin and can provide considerable pain relief through their analgesic or numbing effect.  Such oils can relieve local inflammation by setting free mediators in the body, which in turn cause the blood vessels to expand, enabling the blood to move more quickly, thereby reducing the swelling.  Some oils tend to have a balancing or regulating effect on the circulatory system as a whole, reducing the blood pressure if it is too high or stimulating the system if it is sluggish.

Virtually all essential oils have bactericidal properties, promoting the production of white blood cells to help prevent and treat certain infections and illnesses.

Massage

Massage is a relaxing and nourishing experience, not least because of the unspoken communication based on touch, but also by ensuring that the oils are effectively absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream.

The basic strokes derived from massage are effleurage (stroking movements), petrissage (kneading movements), friction (circular movements), tapotement (percussion) and vibration.  These different strokes are employed according to the body part which is being worked on in order to give the desired effect on the client.

Prices

A full body aromatherapy massage will take approximately 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours and costs £40.
A back, shoulder and head aromatherapy massage lasts about 30 - 40 minutes and will cost just £20.

These costs include a full consultation which is required initially in order to establish a full medical history and allergy record, with a follow up report and update on every subequent visit, plus the use of any of the appropriate essential oils according to each clients specific needs.
